Dr. Gunnar Bergqvist comes to Erie, Pennsylvania from Sweden, bringing with him the skill and academic excellence of the country that awards the Nobel Prize. He came to the United States to study medicine, and landed residencies with the most distinguished of university hospitals. That training provided him the skill and knowledge to perform complicated, state-of-the-art surgery in the field of plastic and microvascular reconstruction.
Dr. Bergqvist has passed the rigorous standards required by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in order to be board-certified in the specialty. He currently serves as the Division Chairman of Plastic Surgery at St. Vincent's Health Center and Saint Vincent's Surgery Center. He is also a member of the General Surgery Department of Saint Vincent's, where he and his colleagues teach young residents the latest and most successful techniques.
While he remains busy with reconstructive procedures for cancer, craniofacial issues and hand injuries, he also serves as the Plastic Surgeon at the Shriners Children's Hospital. He is currently making plans to travel to developing countries with the Smile Train Medical Exchange Program to help children who are suffering from cleft palate and other debilitating disfigurements.
While Dr. Bergvist remains busy with much needed reconstruction, he is popular among patients for cosmetic procedures. He can perform these elective surgeries at several of the outpatient surgery centers, offering privacy and comfort for patients. He has published and presented a myriad of research papers and is a proud member of the ASPS.
